A Spring Wedding at Hotel du Vin Cheltenham

Rebecca arrived at the front door of Hotel du Vin Cheltenham with her bouquet in one hand and her bag in the other, standing with her back to me as she waited. It was a bright May morning on Parabola Road. I photographed her in a full-length white dress against the green of the trees outside, completely unaware of the camera. That image told me what kind of day this was going to be: unforced, real, and entirely itself.

Rebecca and Matthew are bus drivers. They met through mutual friends, reconnected over online gaming during lockdown, and eventually went for an ice cream together. Something settled between them that day. They describe each other as companions, like rocks. The guests they brought with them, colleagues from buses and coaches across two counties, reflected exactly that quality. There were no hierarchies here—no chief bridesmaid, no best man. Everyone is valued equally. That is a rare thing at a wedding, and it showed in the photographs.

I travelled down from Worcestershire for this one. Hotel du Vin Cheltenham was new to me, and arriving at a venue for the first time always sharpens the attention. I spent the time before the ceremony working out the light, the spaces, the angles. What I found was a venue with more photographic range than its compact footprint suggests.

Before the Ceremony

Matthew was already at the hotel when I arrived. I found him in the main lounge, settled into a leather booth beneath a large mural of a wine bottle, the warm room light catching him clearly against the darker wall behind. He was looking across the room. Not at anything in particular. Just somewhere between composure and anticipation. I shot it from a distance, through the plants and furniture. It is one of my favourite frames from the day.

The lounge at Hotel du Vin Cheltenham is worth noting for pre-ceremony coverage. The olive green walls, wine-themed artwork, antique lamps, and layered textures give the room genuine depth. It is the kind of interior that photographs well without needing to be rearranged. Matthew sat in it, and the room did the rest.

The venue details were set up and ready when I arrived. Wine bottles and ivy on a barrel table—the Bistro du Vin signage. The spiral staircase catches the light from above. I documented all of it before the guests arrived. These are the frames that give a wedding gallery its structure.

The Ceremony

The ceremony took place in Hotel du Vin's outdoor courtyard, enclosed by the green-painted pergola structure and walls of mature planting. In May, at 1 pm, the sun was directly overhead, and the patio was in full, hard light. That requires careful positioning. I worked from the sides and through the pergola columns, using the structure to frame the couple without letting the bright sky blow out behind them.

Rebecca walked in with her father's arm. She was smiling before she was halfway down the aisle, a wide, open smile aimed directly at Matthew. That expression, caught as she moved through the dappled shade under the pergola canopy into the full sun of the ceremony space, is the strongest single frame from the ceremony.

During the vows, I positioned myself to keep both faces in frame while shooting through the pergola uprights. Rebecca looked up at Matthew during the ring exchange. A guest in the second row, her father was watching with the concentrated, slightly undone expression of a man trying to hold himself together. I watched for that. It is always there at outdoor ceremonies if you know where to look.

The confetti moment after the ceremony was chaotic and loud and exactly right. The whole group lined the patio and threw everything at once in the strong midday light. Rebecca and Matthew walked through it mid-kiss. The full group shot followed everyone raising fists in the air on the patio, the pergola and fairy lights behind them, clear blue sky above.

Portraits in Cheltenham

For the couple portraits, we moved outside the hotel onto the streets of Cheltenham. This was the right decision. The Georgian terraces along Parabola Road and the surrounding streets provide what a hotel courtyard cannot: architectural scale, long sightlines, and the kind of urban elegance that suits a couple who are not looking for a countryside backdrop.

Rebecca and Matthew were relaxed almost immediately. They walked together, held hands, and looked at each other. I stayed back and let them move. The best portrait from the street session is a wide shot: the two of them walking away from the camera down a quiet road, brick walls and Georgian stone on either side, tall May trees filling the upper frame, the light hard, flat, and honest.

The close-up portraits on the hotel steps came later. Matthew looked across at Rebecca. Both of them are looking down the road together. Neither of them is performing. That ease in front of the camera comes from not directing too much. I give people space and wait.

The spiral staircase inside the hotel provided the backdrop for the formal couple portraits. Shot from below, with the curve of the staircase sweeping across the frame above them, Rebecca and Matthew descend side by side. The warm wall lighting and the dark wood of the bannister gave the image a richness that the outdoor frames lack. It is worth knowing that this staircase is one of the strongest interior portrait locations in the building.

Speeches, Reception and the Evening

The speeches took place at 15:30 in the dining room, a warm, green-walled space with tall windows looking onto the garden. Rebecca gave her speech, standing phone in hand, animated, mid-gesture. Matthew's expression as he listened was the one I was waiting for: part pride, part amusement, completely unguarded. I shot it from beside the table, keeping Rebecca blurred in the foreground and Matthew's face sharp in the background.

Matthew's speech produced a different frame, him standing, hand resting on Rebecca's shoulder, both of them laughing. The window light behind them filled the room without flattening it. The table flowers, the scattered confetti petals, the champagne glasses, all of it in frame without being arranged.

One guest at the wedding breakfast photographed himself, deadpan, blowing soap bubbles while everyone else was occupied with the meal. I took the picture. It will be in the gallery.

As the evening developed, I looked at the chandelier. Hotel du Vin Cheltenham's wine glass chandelier hangs in the double-height atrium above the spiral staircase. It is made entirely from inverted wine glasses, lit from within. In the dark of the evening, it produces a warm, amber glow that fills the space above the wooden floor below. I positioned Rebecca and Matthew beneath it and used off-camera flash to light them from the side, keeping the chandelier soft and out of focus in the foreground. At the same time, the couple were sharp behind it. The result is a portrait that could only have been taken in this building.

The first dance was shot from the upper level, looking down through the same chandelier. Rebecca spinning, Matthew holding her hand above her head, the warm floor below them, the staircase curving away to the right. It is a composed frame, not a candid. Still, it uses the architecture of Hotel du Vin Cheltenham to turn a first-dance photograph into something that belongs specifically to this venue and this couple.

Why Hotel du Vin Cheltenham Works for Wedding Photography

Hotel du Vin Cheltenham is a converted Regency townhouse on Parabola Road, in the heart of one of Gloucestershire's most architecturally distinctive towns. For wedding photography, the venue offers a layered set of environments across a single building and its immediate surroundings, and that variety is what makes it work.

The outdoor courtyard ceremony space is enclosed and intimate, framed by the green pergola structure and mature planting. It suits spring and summer weddings particularly well. The midday light in May is direct and requires management. Still, the pergola provides natural shade opportunities, and the columns give a photographer framing structures to work with.

The interior is character-rich without being fussy. The lounge, with its wine-themed murals, leather booths, and warm lighting, photographs well for pre-ceremony coverage. The spiral staircase is the strongest single interior feature, sweeping, well-lit, and architecturally distinctive. The atrium above it, anchored by the wine glass chandelier, is essential for evening portrait work.

The streets immediately outside the hotel provide a genuinely useful Cheltenham backdrop. The Georgian terraces, the iron railings, the tree-lined roads, all of it within a short walk of the front door. For couples who want urban elegance rather than countryside formality, this is an asset.

The venue's colour palette, olive greens, warm ambers, and dark wood, holds well in both natural and artificial light. It does not fight the photography. This matters more than couples usually realise when choosing a venue.

Paul Hickey of Once in a Lifetime Photography covers weddings across Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, and the wider West Midlands. Hotel du Vin Cheltenham sits comfortably within that range.

Planning a Wedding at Hotel du Vin Cheltenham: A Few Things Worth Knowing

  • Book a 1 pm ceremony for outdoor spring and summer weddings, but discuss light management with your photographer in advance. Midday sun on the patio is direct and overhead, beautiful conditions for bright, clean images. Still, the contrast between lit and shadowed areas requires a photographer who understands how to position people in it. It is not a forgiving light for those who do not.

  • The spiral staircase is not just a feature; it is one of the best portrait locations in the building. Build a few minutes into your post-ceremony timeline to use it. The curve of the staircase, the warm wall lighting, and the dark wood create images with a richness that outdoor spaces lack.

  • Go outside. The streets immediately surrounding Hotel du Vin on Parabola Road in Cheltenham are an underused portrait location. The Georgian terraces, trees in full May leaf, and quiet side streets give a very different set of images from anything shot inside the courtyard. A 15-minute walk produces a significantly more varied gallery.

  • The wine glass chandelier in the atrium requires off-camera flash to use properly in the evening. The ambient light in that space alone is not sufficient for a sharp couple portrait. If you want those images and they are worth having, confirm that your photographer is experienced with off-camera flash work before you book.

  • Confetti is permitted on the patio. Rebecca and Matthew's confetti moment in full May sun, with the whole group throwing at once, produced one of the strongest frames of the day. Confirm the current confetti policy with your venue coordinator, as rules can change.

  • The dining room windows face the garden and provide excellent natural light for speeches and the wedding breakfast. An afternoon sitting time of 14:30, as Rebecca and Matthew had worked well, the light through those windows is warm and directional at that time of day without being harsh.

Rebecca and Matthew

Rebecca walked into that courtyard, smiling, before she reached Matthew. He was already waiting, composed and still, having sat quietly in the lounge for the previous hour. Between the two of them, the day had a particular kind of ease, unhurried, unpretentious, and warm in the way that a group of people who genuinely like each other tends to be.
