The wine-themed lounge. The spiral staircase. The atrium with its chandelier made entirely from wine glasses. The Georgian streets of Cheltenham are immediately outside the front door.

The Spiral Staircase

The spiral staircase inside Hotel du Vin Cheltenham is one of the best locations for interior portraiture in Gloucestershire. The curve of the staircase, the warm wall lighting on the painted panels, and the dark wood of the bannister create a naturally composed frame. Shot from below, with the couple descending together, it produces images rich in detail that outdoor spaces cannot match.

Build five minutes into your post-ceremony timeline to use this staircase. It takes almost no time and produces images that sit apart from everything else in the gallery.

The Wine Glass Chandelier

The atrium above the staircase contains Hotel du Vin Cheltenham’s most distinctive feature: a chandelier constructed entirely from inverted wine glasses, lit from within, hanging in the double-height space above the wooden floor below.

In the evening, this chandelier is the centrepiece of the creative portrait session. I position the couple beneath it and use off-camera flash to light them from the side, keeping the chandelier soft and out of focus in the foreground while the couple are sharp behind it. The warm amber glow of the glass, the dark walls of the atrium, and the directed flashlight combine to produce a portrait that could only have been taken in this building.

The first dance, photographed from the upper level  looking down through the chandelier to the couple on the floor below, is the signature image this venue produces. It uses the architecture completely.

What Makes Hotel du Vin Cheltenham Work for Wedding Photography?

Hotel du Vin Cheltenham is a converted Regency townhouse on Parabola Road. The building spans several interconnected spaces, each with a distinct photographic character.

Most wedding venues offer one or two strong portrait locations. Hotel du Vin Cheltenham offers five or six, and they are genuinely different from each other. That variety is what makes a wedding gallery here feel complete rather than repetitive.

The Outdoor Courtyard

The ceremony courtyard is enclosed by a green-painted pergola structure with mature planting on all sides. Chairs are set in rows on the cobbled patio. The pergola provides natural framing for ceremony photography. The uprights create a foreground structure, and the overhead canopy filters the light in spring and summer.

A 1pm ceremony in May produces direct overhead sun on the patio. That is manageable and produces clean, bright images. A photographer who understands how to position people in high-contrast light will use it well. The key is to work with the pergola's shade rather than against it.

The courtyard also produces excellent confetti photographs. The enclosed space means everyone throws at once. In May sunshine, a full confetti exit on this patio generates some of the strongest frames of the day.

The Hotel Lounge

The lounge at Hotel du Vin Cheltenham is furnished with wine-themed murals, leather booths, antique lamps, and layered textures on olive-green walls. It photographs naturally, without needing to be rearranged.

For pre-ceremony coverage, this room works well for the groom and groomsmen. The depth and warmth of the interior produce portraits with genuine atmosphere. A groom sitting quietly in a leather booth, the mural behind him, the room light falling cleanly, that image takes seconds to take and holds its own in a gallery.

The Streets of Cheltenham

The most underused location at Hotel du Vin Cheltenham is immediately outside the front door. The Georgian terraces of Parabola Road and the surrounding streets provide architectural scale, long sight lines, and an urban elegance that suits couples who are not looking for a countryside backdrop.

A 15-minute portrait walk on the streets of Cheltenham produces images that look entirely different to anything taken inside the venue. Wide shots down quiet roads with brick walls and tall May trees. Close portraits against the white render of the Regency facades. The variety this adds to a gallery is significant.
