GETTING MARRIED AT ASHTON LODGE
Ashton Lodge is an Edwardian country house near Rugby, Warwickshire, set on three acres of private grounds with a licensed ceremony room for up to 120 guests. Couples wanting an outdoor ceremony can use the venue's purpose-built wooden gazebo in the gardens instead. Bridal preparation typically happens in individually styled bedrooms on-site, giving the morning a settled, unhurried feel rather than a rented function room.
Outside, the grounds mix modern styling with genuine rustic character: a brick archway, open lawn, raised decking, a field edge, mature trees, an old tractor, a pagoda, a hedge wall, and a large tree with a wooden swing. That variety makes Ashton Lodge a strong location for both couple portraits and family groups, without needing to leave the site.
The wedding breakfast and evening reception take place in the venue's marquee. On Charlotte and Richard's wedding this June, part of the marquee's interior featured pale wood-style wall panelling that gave the room a more finished, rustic look; ask your venue coordinator whether this is still in place when you visit.

MY APPROACH TO PHOTOGRAPHING ASHTON LODGE
Ashton Lodge changes character several times across a wedding day, and my approach changes with it. The ceremony room is pale and naturally lit by windows, which looks attractive but creates a real challenge from the upper-left aisle position: the bride can be strongly lit from behind by the windows. I manage this using careful exposure control and small position changes, rather than flattening the room with flash.
Guest arrivals are the most technically demanding part of an Ashton Lodge wedding for a photographer. Guests move quickly between bright outdoor sunlight, a lounge area with strong window backlight, and a darker bar with coloured lighting, so I expect to change exposure and settings continuously through that hour.
For group photographs, the lawn and raised decking give me real options. A large group works well shot from the decking down onto the lawn, and for smaller groups I've found an 85mm lens at a wide aperture, when there's enough working distance, produces noticeably stronger background compression against the trees and greenery than a wider lens at the same distance.
After dark, the large tree, the brick archway and the marquee's wall panelling all offer genuine potential for creative portraits using off-camera flash and coloured gels, part of my signature creative night portrait work, and something I look for at every Ashton Lodge wedding.
A REAL WEDDING AT ASHTON LODGE
Charlotte and Richard married at Ashton Lodge in June 2026, with full-day coverage and a second shooter recording everything from bridal preparation through to a champagne-spray finale. A PHOTOGRAPHER'S GUIDE TO PORTRAIT LOCATIONS AT ASHTON LODGE
Ashton Lodge's grounds give a photographer more genuine variety than most Warwickshire wedding venues of an equivalent size. Across three visits, these are the locations I use most, and why each one works.
The brick archway Used for both the confetti exit and as a portrait backdrop. Its texture holds up well in flat daylight and responds particularly well to coloured-gel lighting once the sun goes down.
The lawn and raised decking The lawn is the venue's main space for large group photographs, shot from the elevated decking looking down. It also gives enough working distance for longer lenses on smaller groups.
The field edge and trees Quieter, more natural-feeling backdrops a short walk from the main lawn, useful for couple portraits away from the main gathering.
The old tractor A distinctive, characterful feature that photographs well for couples wanting something other than a straightforward garden backdrop.
The pagoda and hedge wall Two more structured locations that suit couples who want a slightly more formal frame within an otherwise relaxed portrait route.
The large tree and wooden swing: Popular with children during the day and a genuinely useful portrait location for couples; it overlooks the field and photographs well in both daylight and evening light.
Every wedding is different, so I can't guarantee every location will suit every timetable or be available on the day.

Build in time for creative night portraits. The large tree, brick archway and marquee panelling all offer strong potential for evening portraits using off-camera flash and coloured gels. Ask your photographer to schedule this rather than leaving it to chance late in the evening.
