Laura and Steve were married in the Pump Rooms at Hogarths Stone Manor in the last week of May. It was warm, properly sunny, the kind of light that makes an outdoor ceremony worth the risk. I know how well the grounds work when the weather plays along, and this was one of those days.
Getting Ready
Laura got ready at Hogarths Stone Manor, surrounded by her mum, her bridesmaids, and a flower girl and page boy weaving between everyone's feet. Steve's mum arrived sometime during the morning, adding to the mix of nerves and noise that comes with a full room on a wedding morning. Champagne was definitely part of it.
The moment that stayed with me came when Laura opened a card and, separately, a bottle of perfume from Steve. It was Steve's mum who read the card and lost her composure for a few seconds. It wasn't a big gesture. It was a small one that landed hard, and I was glad I had a camera pointed at it when it did.
The Ceremony
The Pump Rooms at Hogarths Stone Manor were once an outdoor swimming pool. It's been filled in now, replaced with a paved aisle running between two open canopies where guests sit, leading to the old pump house at the far end. It sounds like an odd setting for a wedding ceremony. In late May sunshine, with the black-and-white timber building dressed in white flowers, it works.
Laura and Steve married with the pump house directly in front of them, an arch of white flowers over its doorway. I flew the drone earlier that same morning, before any guests arrived, to catch the ceremony space empty and precisely laid out. There's a shot from directly overhead that I still think about, for how sharply the hedges around the walled garden are cut.
Speeches happened later, in the Garden Room, but the emotion of the day started here. Several guests were in tears before the readings had finished. Laura was too. Nobody was trying to hide it.
Confetti and Drinks in the Walled Garden
Confetti came as Laura and Steve stepped out of the Pump Rooms and climbed the steps toward the main hotel; guests lined up either side of the path through the drawing room gardens. We worked our way from the fountain along the path, past the hedgerow, down to a bench under the trees on the far side of the lawn. None of it was rushed. Laura and Steve walked; I hung back, and the better moments came when they forgot I was there.
Reception & Evening
The wedding breakfast and speeches took place in the Garden Room, looking back out over the grounds we'd spent the afternoon walking through. Sage green ran through the styling, tall white rose and eucalyptus arrangements on gold stands, and chairs dressed in soft green chiffon. The mood in the room by the time speeches finished was somewhere between laughter and tears, often within the same sentence. Cake cutting was in the early evening, with the first dance following shortly after.
After the wedding breakfast and speeches, we stepped outside for creative portraits with blue smoke, deliberately chosen because Steve supports Birmingham City. One of his oldest friends, an Aston Villa supporter, was talked into running through the background holding a second blue smoke bomb, which everyone found considerably funnier than he did.
Once the smoke had cleared, we stayed out a little longer for a handful of quieter portraits, finishing with Laura on her own on the open lawn, away from the building, with nothing in the frame but grass and tree line. It's the kind of image that only works with a bit of space and a bit of trust, and Laura gave me both. We found one more spot after that, a second bench further into the hotel gardens, for a last portrait before heading back in for the evening.
Blue Diamond Entertainment provided the DJ for the evening, and the dance floor filled properly once things got underway. Drinks flowed, and the party ran late, with the sort of festive cheer that makes for a proper wedding evening.
Later, as the light dropped, most of the guests came down to a small wooden bench under a rose-covered arbour for a group portrait, lit by the last of the evening sun. Laura had a quiet moment with her parents on the lawn as the sky turned, one of those unplanned sunset portraits that only happens if you're already outside and paying attention. The night finished with a champagne spray on the dance floor, cheered on by whoever was still standing.
