The Holt Fleet sits low beside the River Severn, so the river is often the brightest thing in the frame. Under the canopy, faces can fall into shade against the bright water behind. In the glass conservatory, light from the front left lit the bride evenly at a recent October ceremony.
Before your wedding day, I check which ceremony space you have and which way it faces. That decides where I stand, which lenses I carry and whether I need flash. It means no guesswork on the day and no rearranging in front of your guests.

How I photograph a Holt Fleet wedding
Documentary coverage through the day
For most of your day I'm an observer. I photograph arrivals, the ceremony, drinks under the canopy and the speeches as they happen. I don't stop the day to pose it.
Group photographs are quick and organised from a list we agree beforehand. Couple portraits are short and planned. At Michele and Mark's October wedding, five minutes by the river was enough for an aerial portrait from the jetty.
Creative night portraits by the river
Once it's dark, I use off-camera flash, coloured gels, smoke, bubble guns and champagne sprays. At The Holt Fleet, the wooden gateway, rear steps and riverside each give a different backdrop. All three are a short walk from the dance floor, so a session takes about ten minutes.

The Holt Fleet at a glance
The Holt Fleet is a family-run riverside venue at Holt Heath, Worcestershire (WR6 6NL), beside the River Severn near Ombersley. It is approved for civil ceremonies. Next to it stands Holt Fleet Bridge, built by Thomas Telford in 1828 and Grade II listed.

Where I take photographs at The Holt Fleet
The conservatory
The glass conservatory is my favourite ceremony space here. Side light from the windows lights the couple evenly, so I rarely need flash during the vows. In a small room, I keep my movement to a minimum.
The canopy
The covered canopy works well for a drinks reception, sheltered but open to the river. For a ceremony here, I expose for your faces and accept a brighter river behind, or add gentle fill light.
The rear steps and lawn
The rear steps are the most useful spot at the venue. They give enough height for a full group photograph, and after dark they become an evening portrait station. Smaller family groups work on the lawn, though wind off the river can be cold in autumn.
The jetty and the river
The jetty gives a river-level portrait looking back at the building. With the venue's agreement, I also fly a drone over the water for an aerial view with the reflection below.
Holt Fleet Bridge
Telford's bridge makes a strong backdrop for golden-hour couple portraits and wider scenes. Becky and Kurtis's portraits with the bridge behind them show how well it works.
The wooden gateway
A wooden gate between fir trees makes a quiet backdrop for coloured-light portraits and silhouettes after dark.
The wedding breakfast room and dance floor
The wedding breakfast room is darker than the rest of the venue, and its high ceilings stop bounced flash working. I use off-camera flash for the speeches there. On the dance floor, two flashes behind me light the couple from the front while keeping the band or DJ lighting.
Planning your Holt Fleet wedding photography
Ask which ceremony space you'll have. The conservatory and the canopy light faces very differently. Knowing early lets me plan where to stand and whether to bring extra lighting.
Keep your group list short. Each group takes about five minutes, so I suggest fewer than ten. Wind off the Severn shortens time outside in cooler months.
Decide how much portrait time you want. Five minutes is enough for one strong riverside portrait. Twenty minutes allows the bridge, the jetty and the lawn.
Check drone use and jetty access with the venue. Permission can depend on the date and the weather. Your coordinator can confirm both.
Ask the venue about confetti. Rules change, so check what is allowed and where before you buy it.
Leave ten minutes for evening portraits. In autumn and winter it's dark before the first dance, so portraits fit easily after the meal.
