Getting Married at The Commandery
The Commandery is a Grade I listed, timber-framed building on Sidbury in Worcester city centre, a short walk from the cathedral. It served as the Royalist headquarters during the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Today Museums Worcestershire runs it as a museum and licensed wedding venue.
Ceremonies take place in the Great Hall, which has a 15th-century timbered roof and a minstrels' gallery. Museums Worcestershire lists it for up to 80 seated guests, or 150 for a less formal party. The Solar Room seats 56, the Oak Apple Suite seats 25, and the walled garden can take a marquee for up to 150.
There's no in-house catering, so you bring your own caterers. Isabelle and Chris used a pizza van. Naked flames aren't allowed, events finish by 11pm, and there's parking for five cars at the rear. For hire fees and dates, contact Museums Worcestershire directly.

Couples who want real history and are happy to shape the day themselves. It suits people who like dark, atmospheric rooms over a bright function suite, and it suits camera-shy couples well: the walled garden has plenty of quiet corners for short, natural portraits.
How I Photograph The Commandery
Dark historic interiors don't need forcing into looking bright. They need a photographer who knows where the light already is. In the Great Hall, that means using the pools of light from the windows and doorways rather than flattening the room with flash. I place couples in that light and shoot from the darker parts of the room, so the building keeps its atmosphere. It's the same documentary approach I take at every wedding.
For camera-shy couples I keep posed time short. Isabelle and Chris wanted natural coverage, so their couple portraits took around ten minutes in the garden: the lawn, the flower border, a cannon and a bench against the old brick wall. Ten focused minutes in the right places gives more variety than an hour of forced posing.
Rain is a real consideration at any Worcestershire wedding. The Commandery's interiors work as a wet-weather backup for groups, and on a wet evening the carved staircase near the entrance makes a good spot for softbox-lit guest portraits.
A Real Wedding at The Commandery: Isabelle & Chris
Isabelle and Chris married at The Commandery on 29 August 2026, with rain forecast for most of the day. The day was built around real moments: a quiet first look with Isabelle's father, a ceremony with several readings, a confetti line in the garden, and speeches that referenced the building's Civil War history.
Between showers that evening, we made two creative portraits that could only have been taken here. One used a coloured gel behind a tree near the building. Planning Your Commandery Wedding Photography
The museum may be open before your ceremony. Volunteers and visitors may be around during the afternoon, so don't assume exclusive use from arrival.
Some gates can be locked. Gates toward the canal and front grounds may need a staff member to unlock them for portraits further afield.
The Great Hall is dark by design. That's character, not a problem. An experienced photographer works with the window light.
The garden is your most flexible outdoor space. It handles group photographs and couple portraits, with the interiors as a backup in rain.
