The Old Library Building is the registry office, and the ceremony room is inside it. It opened as Lichfield’s Free Library and Museum and held the city’s library and museum collections until 1989, when the library moved to its present home. Its stonework and arched windows are what appear behind you in the photographs taken as you come out of the ceremony.
Because the frontage is the venue itself, group photographs need no travel at all. The steps onto Bird Street work well for the whole group, and there is a quieter corner to one side for couple portraits when the pavement is busy.
Minster Pool and Beacon Park
Minster Pool is a two minute walk from the registry office. It was reshaped into its present serpentine form in the 1770s at the suggestion of the Lichfield poet Anna Seward, who also created the walk along its southern bank. Minster Pool Walk gives you the view across the water to the cathedral’s three spires, and the Garden of Remembrance, dedicated in 1920, sits beside it. Speakers’ Corner stands at the Dam Street end. When the walk was restored in 2011 its avenue of lime trees was replanted with up-lighting, which makes it one of the few places in the city centre genuinely suited to evening portraits.
Beacon Park covers 81 acres and is a short walk west of the registry office. The part that matters for wedding portraits is Museum Gardens at the city end, where the formal beds and lawns sit alongside the statues of Captain Edward Smith of the Titanic, King Edward VII and Erasmus Darwin, and Chancellor Law’s fountain.
